4 Helpful Home Renovations for Empty Nesters

Now that the kids are gone, it’s time to celebrate by making all that empty space yours again.

Now that the kids are gone, it’s time to celebrate by making all that empty space yours again.

You’ve seen it before in TV shows and movies: the kids move out only to return and find their beloved childhood bedroom has now become a home gym or a sewing room. While the laugh track rolls, you may find yourself wondering which home remodelling ideas you’d turn to when it’s your turn to enjoy a newly empty nest.

Well if that time is now and you’re still wondering what to do, here are four ideas to consider.

1.  Renovate the Children’s Old Bedrooms

Now that the kids are gone, you can finally start thinking about what to do with their vacated bedrooms. Some popular options for these spaces include:

  • Home gym
  • Sewing/craft room
  • Library
  • Office

If none of these ideas appeal to you, and you’d like to keep the room the same, you could consider repainting. A fresh coat of colour will help freshen up the space and breathe new life into it.

2. Remodel to Increase the Sale’s Value

Now that the kids are gone, that four-bedroom home may feel a little too big for just the two of you. If you’re thinking about downsizing, you may want to consider remodelling some of the areas in your home that will help increase the resale value.

If you decide to go down this road, think about executing kitchen and bathroom renovations first. Remodelling these will add a lot of resale value to a home.

If you’re unsure about what to do, speak with a professional renovation contractor. They can assess your home and let you know what areas require attention.

3. Invest in a Sunroom Addition

With the kids gone, you’ll likely find yourself with quite a bit of free time. You may even find the time to get started on that stack of books that’s been sitting beside your bed for the last few years. A sunroom is the perfect place to curl up and be a bookworm for a little while.

Or maybe you’d rather spend your time visiting with friends or challenging your partner to a round of crib. A sunroom is an excellent place for that too. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy the sun all year round.

4. Build a Master Suite for Future Grandchildren

If you’ve got two empty bedrooms sitting side by side, knock down the wall between them. You can turn two empty bedrooms into one big master bedroom complete with their bathrooms. When your kids return (hopefully with grandkids in tow), they can relax in their very own repurposed space.

This new renovation will give guests the ultimate visiting experience, and it’ll keep them from taking over the shared bathrooms.
