Home Renovation Trends Best Avoided

While Pinterest can be credited for some novel ideas for home renovations, Kelowna designers often cringe when presented with projects inspired by it and other social media platforms. We’ve seen what can happen when DIYers try to replicate what they find on these sites, and it’s not always pretty.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t use websites like Pinterest as a starting point. They can provide a good visual representation of what you’re looking for in remodeling project. But it’s worth bearing in mind that what you see doesn’t always translate well to real life.

Plus, there are certain trends that come along that we, as a Kelowna contractor, feel are best avoided altogether.

Pallet Everything

Type in the word ‘pallet’ in Pinterest and prepare to have your world rocked. You’ll find design ideas for just about everything:

  • Wine racks
  • Bed frames
  • Shelving
  • Desks
  • Porches

The thing about pallets is that you can usually find them for very cheap, or even free, which is obviously appealing. What’s not so attractive is that the wood is usually of inferior quality and can range in condition. Plus, it requires a lot of prep work and is a pain to work with in general.

Tacky Tile

It’s nice to mix it up once in a while with your bathroom renovations. A touch of colour here, some stylish metal hardware there, but it’s certainly possible to have too much of a good thing.

Patterned tile is a good example. While it might work in smaller bathrooms or in limited areas, too much of it can be overwhelming. If you overdo it, your bathroom could end up looking like something by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher.

Open Shelves

We discussed open shelving in the kitchen as modern design trend in our post on Innovative Kitchen Cabinets in Kelowna. However, we made that recommendation with the caveat that your shelves need to remain uncluttered in order for this look to work. This is meant to be a minimalist aesthetic, after all.

Renovating Unnecessarily

This isn’t so much a trend as it is a philosophy. When it comes to home renovations, Kelowna homeowners typically have work done when it’s needed.

Maybe you have a room that’s seriously outdated, or you want to transform a larger room into two smaller bedrooms to accommodate your growing family. These are legitimate reasons for talking to a Kelowna contractor.

However, if you already have a perfectly serviceable bathroom, the benefit of remodeling might not outweigh the cost. Perhaps all it needs is some minor cosmetic changes to give it a fresh look.

For advice you can count on for home renovations, Kelowna homeowners turn to Rafter 4K Contracting. From home additions to bathroom renovations, we handle all types of remodeling projects.
